Club Review: New Slang

It’s funny how things ebb and flow. A decade ago you couldn’t get a full night’s sleep for all the great midweek dance nights (Gogglez especially springs to mind) but then when The Strokes hit everything became indie night. Now pop music dominates but electro is really coming back as the student-friendly clubbing choice (see Thursday Club). And what about the poor indie kids – where are they supposed to go? Well, New Slang, basically. All the old guard – Mad For It, Snide etc – have packed up and left this lively young pup to hold the fort, if that’s not a slightly confusing but delightful mixed metaphor.

Let’s be clear though, New Slang have history. For a while now they’ve been ruling Kingston with a night of the same name that has tempted Foals, The Maccabees, Crystal Castles and many more to take to their stage. As we’re writing apparently Babyshambles are soundchecking. No such luck down south yet, but it’s a solid DJ-based night already with bands promised in the future. Los Campesinos! are booked for February, which ought to be a cracker.

So at the moment we have a decent indie night for a decent price (£3), a bundle of drinks for £2.20) and DJs who really know their apples. The playlist includes MGMT, Phoenix, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and the Phenomenal Handclap Band. Just great tunes all night then. No wonder they’re the biggest indie night in Kingston – will they repeat the success here?
