Why don’t all the buttons in your toolbar work?
Good question. Basically we are updating our website page by page. It should all be working within the next couple of weeks.
When is the SOURCE out?
It’s out on the 1st of every month, except for January when we hibernate in a sea of lukewarm Resolve. Be quick though – it can go quickly, especially when the students are in town.
Where can I pick up SOURCE?
Pretty much in every pub, bar, café, record shop and cool clothes shop in the Brighton & Hove area. If you’re struggling try Rounder (Brighton Sq) or Resident (Kensington Gardens).
How do I advertise?
Click here for the media pack or phone Fran on (01273) 561617. The advertising closing date is normally 15th of the month before but the earlier you book the page the more chance we have of matching your ad to the most relevant part of the magazine.
Is it expensive?
No, actually pretty cheap. It’s especially good value for money when you think that we print up 15,000 copies with a guestimated readership of 45,000 young Britonians (ie, pretty much all of them).
Can I advertise on the website?
Sure thing – give Fran a nudge.
How do I get editorial?
Well, the first thing is we need to know about your event or release in time. If it happens at any time in, say, June we need to know about it by 2nd May. That might sound early but that’s the way we roll. Then we just have to love it – or think our readers will love it – enough to put it to the top of our massive pile of suggestions.
How to I get my night/gig in the listings?
Easy – just email the details (venue, name, DJs/acts playing, times, costs, type of music) to listings@brightonsource.co.uk by the 15th of the month before. For more details click here.
Why don’t you do reviews of gigs?
Basically we want you to be able to go to anything you’ve read about in the month that the magazine is out. The aim is to get you excited about what’s going on that month and get you off the sofa to check it out, hence all the previews.
Will you write about my band?
Maybe. The first thing is to send us a demo to review (see address below). Also let us know about you gigs. There are about 1,000 bands in Brighton so don’t be disappointed if you don’t make it in straight away. Including a coherent press release is a very good start.
How do I get you to come down to my club night with your photographer?
Send us an email. There’s a big queue of nights we’re trying to get in the mag but we’re always up for anything different. If your night is brand new send us a logo and details for a piece in our Pleased To Meet You Section first
Do you do competitions?
Not normally but drop us an email if you’ve got something interesting. Don’t be offended if we say no though.
Will you put me on the cover?
If you’re from Brighton and you’re doing something interesting, then maybe. If you’re a musician or in a band we’d want you to be doing something interesting (album release, big gig, ITV An Audience With…special). If we haven’t written about you before we might want to start with some smaller pieces like record reviews or gig previews. If you’re not in a band don’t worry – we want to put artists, fashion designers and dog trainers on the cover. Those that do poi need not apply though.
I’m an illustrator – can I do some work for you?
Yes please, but there’s bad news. We can’t pay you but new illustrators or artist looking for exposure should contact Hayley Coleman, our designer. We’re especially interested in students looking to build their portfolio. Send some examples over.
Do you do work experience?
Very, very rarely. We’d like to but we haven’t got the desk space most of the time.
Can I write/take photos for you?
Yes and no really. We already have a full team of writers and photographers who seem pretty settled. Obviously some spots come up every now and again, so do mail us. The best way of getting a writer’s job on SOURCE is to send in 200-400 word reviews for this website. Send in as many as you like and we’ll get them all up. Think of it as being in the SOURCE Young Team but with less violence. The best writers are likely to make it to the magazine when the space turns up.
Why do you only write about stuff from Brighton?
Two reasons. Firstly, we don’t need to cover anything further a field as there’s so many great things happening in town that need attention. Also, if you want to read about bands from London, artists from San Francisco there are plenty of other magazines. We don’t want to write about the same stuff.
Is it true you were the first magazine to put Bat For Lashes, Fujiya & Myagi, Foals and The Pipettes on the front cover?
Why, yes it is. And that’s the reason we just focus on Brighton & Hove.
Can I be your MySpace or Facebook friend?
Yes, that’d be lovely. Find us on MySpace and on Facebook.
What are your deadlines to get in the magazine
Weren’t you listening when we told you above? OK, here goes:
Editorial – 2nd
Advertising – 15th
Listings - 15th
These are all dates for the month before. Don’t miss out.
